The tale begins with a drug-fueled nude dance and gets more flamboyantly masochistic as it goes. A Million Little Pieces is a semi-fictionalal book written about the harrowing life of a young man who is struggling with an overwhelming and deadly drug and alcohol addition. As a film, the biggest issue with A Million Little Pieces isn’t whether any of this happened; it’s that, even if it did, none of it stands out from the many similar movies that came before it. It wasn't even possible to locate a police mug shot of Frey, despite claims in the book that he'd been arrested for a variety of crimes, some of them outrageous.

Despite the source being stained by Frey's exposure as a fabulist, it's easy to see why the Taylor-Johnsons fought to get this film version made anyway. And this book provides an open door into the mind of an addict, revealted to be dark, hurt and weak.

He is angry, hurt, pathetic and lost.
